🏘️ Communities within Colonies 🏘️

The Terraverse is a rich tapestry consisting of diverse projects, protocols, groups and more. Learn about where these various communities could call home in the Colonies metaverse.

Colonies

From the very beginning of the Galactic Gridz and Colonies projects, one of the most exciting and unique features has been the ability for various communities throughout the Terraverse to have their own spaces, while still sharing an umbrella platform. This shared platform approach opens up the potential for wide-scale collaboration, social integration and development between different communities; something that will no doubt aid in continuing to strengthen Terra. A large majority of engagement has been with NFT communities but we’ve also seen interest from a wide variety of groups, especially with the extensive list of words available for Gridz addresses.

In this article we are going to focus on communities related to the Colony level of the Gridz address. In a future article we’ll look at the more exclusive Sector level communities. As a reminder, we have the Colony (first word), Sector (second word) and Home (third word). We also have the Areas containing the Colonies which we addressed in a previous article. Think of it as analogous to a US address where Area is the country (USA), Colony is the state (California), Sector is the city (Hill Valley) and Home is the street address (1640 Riverside Drive). Excluding the Area then, Colony is the largest ‘grouping’ within each Gridz address. With the current format, mathematically speaking, it is possible to have up to 10,000 different Gridz addresses within each Colony. It would likely take quite a few multi-generation mints before that limit was reached (unless everyone decided to mint the same Colony). The net result being that there is now base level communities formed in Colonies with excellent potential for scaling as necessary.

The structure of a Galactic Gridz address and how it relates to Colonies

In the real world, it’s generally not that common to find a single community that inhabits an entire large location without sharing it with atleast other smaller communities. The same can be said in Colonies. If we look at any given Colony, we’ll likely find multiple communities within them. However, by looking at the dominant one we can get a sense for primarily where the various communities are calling home. Think of it like a country; not every citizen of the USA lives in the USA, but that doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t still call it the USA. Often, people want to be somewhere that is popular for a multitude of reasons; opportunity, security, friends/family etc. We’ll see those same similarities with Colonies.

Below is a table which shows an initial conceptual categorisation of communities in Colonies. This was achieved primarily through a mixture of commonly agreed upon Colony-community usage and community name/aspects relating to the Colony word. This is not a complete or definitive list, some known communities are not shown as it was just not clear where to assign them at this point. Ultimately it’s up to the communities themselves to decide. If your community isn’t shown or you believe its incorrectly assigned in the table, reach out to us in Discord and provide the details — we’d love to hear about it! This table is on the larger side and although it can be viewed below, it is advisable to download the CSV or click ‘View larger version’ for optimal formatting. This will also allow you to sort columns in a different order and filter results. Note that for NFT communities specifically, only the main collection is listed. For example, you will find WagmiMonkeez but not WagmiKongz or WagmiBabyApez.

As we can see, a real mix of different type standard communities have been included. Also included are some more unique ones (categorised as Other) that could be specific to Colonies and start the formation of a new club within. Both The Club and Wen Club being good examples. The seems to have been used in a variety of descriptive ways which, although doesn’t link to an existing traditional community, seems appropriate to group together given the similar approaches used in the Gridz addresses. The same concept also applies to Wen. What this shows us is that Colonies could be the facilitator for a number of new and perhaps emerging communities, helping to incubate and then grow these groups within the Terraverse.

It’s worth pointing out that likely due to the name Galactic Gridz, and the connection to the Galactic Punks, the Galactic Colony was by far the most popular choice. It is therefore also likely to be the most diverse with many different communities woven in other than the main ones shown.

If you perhaps minted your Gridz without any thought to community then do not fret! There seems to be numerous addresses that were perhaps minted simply because the three words sounded good together or have a personal meaning to the holder. However, before you dismiss communities, take a look at the table, use your own deductive reasoning and see how your address may actually fit in with others from that Colony. Better yet, join the Colonies discord and make sure to link your Terra wallet and check for roles — this will give you access to a holders only chat room for each Colony you belong to. You may be surprised to find that you have likeminded Colony neighbors without even knowing it!

The community driven aspect of Colonies really cannot be overstated. It will continue to be a focus point for the project moving forwards as we look to further drive collaboration, social engagement and development both within and across communities. Go Forth & Colonize!
